CGC Obedience Class will cover all of the items that will be evaluated for the AKC Canine Good Citizen award. The class will be 6 weeks and the AKC CGC evaluation will be conducted on the last day of class. TEST ITEMS: 1. Accept a Friendly Stranger. The handler and evaluator will shake hands and exchange pleasantries. The dog must show no sign of resentment or shyness, and must not break position to try to go to the evaluator. 2. Sit Politely for Petting. The dog will sit at the handlers side while the evaluator approaches. Evaluator will pet the dog on the head and body. The dog may stand in place to accept petting. The dog must not show signs of shyness or resentment. 3. Appearance and Grooming. The evaluator inspects the dog, then brushes the dog with a brush you provide. The evaluator will lightly examine the ears and each front foot. The dog should not struggle. 4. Out for a Walk (Walking on a Loose Leash). The dog may be on either side of the handler, walk on a loose leash and on a flat or slip collar while paying attention to the handler. Turns are included in this test item. 5. Walk Through a Crowd. The dog and handler will walk around at least three people and pass close. The dog may show some interest in the stranger, but may not appear overexuberant, shy or resentful. The dog shall not strain on the leash. 6. Sit and Down on Command/ Staying in Place. Handler will have the dog sit on command, then down on command and then have the dog either remain in a down or have the dog sit. Handler will tell the dog to stay and then walk forward 20 feet (the dog will be on a 20 foot line). When the handler reaches the end of the line, handler will turn and immediately return to the dog at a normal pace. The dog must remain in place until released by the handler after instructed by the evaluator. 7. Coming when Called. While still on the 20 foot line, the handler will walk 10 feet from the dog, turn and face the dog and then call the dog. When the dog comes to the handler, the handler shall replace the dogs leash with his/her own. The handler shall not “reel in” the dog and the dog must return to the dog. 8. Reaction to another dog. Two handlers with their dogs shall approach one another from 15 feet, stop, shake hands, exchange pleasantries and continue on. Dog may show no more than a casual interest in the distraction dog. The dog shall not cross over the path of the handler to see the other dog. The dog must walk away with the handler and not pull to follow the other dog. 9. The dog will be exposed to a visual and audio distraction. The dog may show casual interest or appear slightly startled but should not panic or pull on the leash to get away. The dog shall not lunge at the distracter. One bark is permissible. 10. Supervised separation. The evaluator will hold the leash of the dog while the handler walks away (out of sight) for 3 minutes. The dog shall not continuously bark or whine. The dog shall not pace unnecessarily. The dog shall not pull on the leash. If there are signs of distress, the test shall end immediately so there is not lasting effects upon the dog. PLEASE NOTE: THE EVALUATION IS INTENDED TO SHOW THAT YOUR DOG IS A CANINE GOOD CITIZEN, TRAINING COLLARS (INCLUDING HALTI’S, GENTLE LEADERS, CHOKE CHAINS, PRONG COLLARS, HARNESSES, ETC), CORRECTIONS, BAIT, AND CLICKERS ARE NOT ALLOWED. IF YOU NEED ANY OF THESE ITEMS, YOUR DOG IS NOT READY TO BE EVALUATED AND SHOULD BE ENROLLED IN A CLASS. URINATION OR DEFECATION AT ANY TIME DURING THE EXAMINATION IS AN AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION. ANY DOG THAT GROWLS OR SNAPS AT, BITES OR ATTACKS OR ATTEMPTS TO ATTACK ANOTHER PERSON OR ANOTHER DOG IS NOT A GOOD CITIZEN AND MUST BE DISMISSED FROM THE TEST. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT IF ANY OF THESE BEHAVIORS ARE OBSERVED IN THE IMMEDIATE TESTING AREA IT SHALL BE DISMISSED FROM THE TEST. AT ANY TIME DURING THE TEST, IF ANY FORM OF AGGRESSION IS SEEN, THE TESTING SHALL BE ENDED. IF A (ONE) TEST ITEM IS MISSED, THAT ITEM CAN BE RETESTED AT THE END OF THE EXAM (IF TIME ALLOWS). IF THERE IS MORE THAN ONE MISSED ITEM, YOUR DOG NEEDS MORE TRAINING AND SHOULD BE ENROLLED IN A CLASS. Equipment needed for class: 1. Training Collar 2. 6’ leash 3. Brush 4. Flat collar. 5. Bait. 6. Earning the CGC award will ensure that your dog is a well-respected member of your community. The Canine Good Citizen award is one of the first AKC certificates your dog can own and CGC provides an excellent foundation for all other training. Canine Good Citizen training is fun and useful. You’ll find that training for the CGC award will help you establish a closer bond with your dog. If you are a dog trainer, you can train your own dog for the CGC test. Another option is to enroll in our CGC obedience class, a basic obedience class specifically geared toward attaining the CGC award. |
