The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is here!!! The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an exciting new program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. Training is open to ALL puppies, not just AKC registered puppies. Once you complete the class and evaluation, you will receive the distinguished AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal. You and your puppy will be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy records. In addition, you’ll receive the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy package that includes: A beautiful, frameable certificate designating your puppy is in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records at AKC. AKC Puppy Handbook, a valuable resource. Discount to enroll in AKC Companion Animal Recovery Corporation, a 24-hour recovery service. Ongoing Monthly E-mail Newsletter: Your AKC. 20 STEPS to Success: The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy TEST OWNER BEHAVIORS: 1. Maintain puppy’s health (vaccinations, exams, appears healthy). You will be required to bring a copy of vaccination records AND show proof that your puppy is in the care of a vet to the first class, puppies must have completed ALL puppy vaccinations and have received their rabies vaccination prior to beginning the first class. An owner who misses the first class, shall forfeit their enrollment, we will only refund 50% of the training fee. Any missed class after the first class shall be counted as a miss and the owner is responsible to make-up the missed class. No refunds shall be given after the first class. 2. Owner receives the Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge, this will be handed out and reviewed in class 1. 3. Owner describes adequate daily play and exercise plan, this will be homework, due by the 4th class in written form. 4. Owner MUST attend at least 6 classes, puppy shall attend 5 of the 6 classes. There are ONLY 6 classes to this course. If you know you will miss one of the classes, please contact us ahead of time to make arrangements to attend another class, or sign up for a different course. The class MUST be taught by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator, we are. If you cannot make it to a class due to injury or illness, you will need to make up the class at another time. 5. Owner MUST bring bags to each class for cleaning up after puppy, this will be checked every class. 6. Owner MUST obtain some form of identification for the puppy - collar tag, microchip, or tattoo. We will check to see that you have identification for your puppy by week 3, if you miss week 3, you will miss the identification portion of this test. We can microchip your puppy for $22.50 but you must register for and pay for this by the first class - microchips will be implanted at the end of session 2. PUPPY BEHAVIORS: 7. Free of aggression toward people during at least 6 weeks of class. If you know you have an aggressive puppy, please contact us BEFORE you enroll in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program for private training. This will be scored in class 6. 8. Free of aggression toward other puppies in class. If you know you have an aggressive puppy, please contact us BEFORE you enroll in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program for private training. This will be scored in class 6. 9. Tolerates collar of the owner’s choice (EXCEPT: Electronic Collars are NOT permitted in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program). We recognize that puppies naturally “fight” collars, please put the collar on your puppy at least 1 week prior to beginning the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program. This will be scored in class 3. 10. Owner can hug or hold the puppy. This will be scored in class 3. 11. Puppy allows owner to take away a treat or a toy. If you know that you will be bitten by your puppy for removing a treat or a toy, contact us BEFORE you enroll in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program for private training. This will be scored in class 4. PRE-CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST BEHAVIORS: 12. Allows (in any position) petting by another person other than the owner. This will be scored in class 4. 13. Grooming - Allows owner handling and brief examination (feet & ears). This will be scored in class 4. 14. Walks on a Leash - Follows owner on lead in a straight line (15 steps). This will be scored in class 6. 15. Walks by other people - Walks on a leash past other people 5 feet away. This will be scored in class 6. 16. Sit on command - Owner may use a food lure. This will be scored in class 6. 17. Down on command - Owner may use a food lure. This will be scored in class 6. 18. Comes to owner from 5 ft when called. This will be scored in class 6. 19. Reaction to Distractions - distractions are presented from 15 ft away. This will be scored in class 5. 20. Stay on leash with another person (owner walks 10 steps and returns). This will be scored in class 5. THIS IS AN INCENTIVE BASED CLASS, IF YOU BELIEVE YOU WILL NEED TO USE CORRECTIONS, PLEASE ENROLL IN ONE OF OUR PUPPY-K CLASSES. You will need to bring: 1. A 6’ leash (either leather or nylon) 2. A training collar 3. A flat collar 4. A brush 5. Bags to clean up after your puppy. 6. A positive attitude - leave any negativity at home, negative attitudes travel quickly through a leash and will inhibit your ability to train your puppy to be a S.T.A.R. THE FIRST CLASS IS FOR OWNERS ONLY. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR PUPPIES AT HOME. |
