We begin with tracking (as opposed to trailing) since competitions are based upon tracking. Tracking is when the dog follows the footsteps track.
Precision is the key to beginning tracking. You and your dog will need to practice every day of the week during this class to be ready for competition on the basic level. Tracking has many rewards, the dog will be settled at the end of each tracking session because your dog will be using his/her primary sense (scent).
Homework is approximately 45 minutes a day and you must find a place where you and your dog can work in a quiet, open space that has little to no traffic (even at other times of the day). The training process can be grueling but the end result is amazing.
Beginning Tracking I meets for 6 weeks in 2 hour sessions.
Beginning Tracking
$150.00
Beginning Tracking I:
By the end of this class, your dog will work a track that is 30 minutes old 500 yards in length with 5 direction changes and indicate upon the article at the end of the track.
Equipment you will need for this class:
Tracking harness
30’ long leash
Bait (hot-dogs or another food that your dog really wants)
Your dog needs to be hungry for this class - we will review feeding guidelines during class 1.
The second stage of tracking is to increase the difficulty of the track by modifying the distance, the age of the track and the distractions along the track.
Keep in mind, this is still tracking, not trailing. If you are not looking to compete with your dog, or if you are looking for a dog that only air-scents, is NOT the class for you, look at our SAR class that meets on Sunday.
This class is intended to prepare you and your dog for the rigors of the TDX (tracking dog excellent) title offered by the AKC. It will also help you score well in the tracking exercises of Schutzhund.
Homework is intensive (approximately 2-3 hours a day - not all at once) and your commitment will determine your results.
Beginning Tracking II meets once a week for 2-3 hours over 6 weeks, and is $150.00
Training Goals for Beginning Tracking II:
By the end of this class, your dog will complete tracks at least 1 hour old and 1000 yards in length with obstacles and up to 10 directional changes & cross tracks without difficulty.
You will need the same equipment as for Beginning Tracking I, you will also need a crate to rest your dog, water & a bowl and hydrating fluids (we do not suggest coffee or soda) for yourself.
